Park Tower isn't downtown. It's in the medical district, which is not a good area. They have done a lot of demolition lately and are trying to revamp the area, but i would NEVER EVER walk around that area at night.

Exchange is downtown. It's in a good location, although it's always been pretty cheap therefore the clientele that has lived there in the past isn't on the same level as the normal downtown resident. But, those memories are from 5 or 6 years ago, so maybe they have changed some things since. But again, the location is good, and it's a high-rise building, so you'd be safe in the apartment. The area is safe as well.

Park Tower is in the green section on the color coded map. (meaning safe ?)
Neighborhoods - Google Maps

I see its near a yellow section...
Park Tower has a gated parking area and would seem to be safe as far as the building/parking. The location not so much?
As far as walking around safety, not the biggest concern with me. Just worried about people breaking into my car/apartment.

Park Tower is right near The Med and LeBonheur hospitals, if I'm thinking of the correct place. That isn't "downtown." You would not be able to walk to anything downtown, like bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Memphis has a lot of crime; there are plenty of "great" areas of town that have pockets of bad areas within them; the opposite is true as well - areas that are overall pretty bad, but have pockets of good neighborhoods.

I personally would never live in that area.

Any other suggestions as far as cheaper rent for a safe area/apartment? I know price has a strong correlation to safety...So something with good balance between the two. Looking for a small studio...

Do you need to be downtown? Or any area of the city or suburbs?

Most important thing is safety & price. Was looking for downtown because of the safety factor. So no it doesn't have to be downtown.
I will be working at FedEx Express on 3131 Democrat Rd.

You can find much cheaper places to live outside of the city limits, in the suburbs. since you will be working south of the city, it might be good to look at apartments in Southaven, MS. That would be about the same drive from downtown each day. Also, midtown Memphis has many inexpensive houses/duplexes/etc for rent, although it's very spotty in terms of safety for cheaper units. It really takes coming here and looking around yourself - I would never recommend moving to Memphis without coming here at least once and spending a full few days touring the area and looking at places yourself.
