I was hoping someone might know what the public schools are like for the Mud Island district. Mostly Elementary. We are wanting to buy a home and are interested in a more city type area but we have heard all Memphis city schools are bad. Thanks

The Downtown Elmentary would probably be the one to serve the island. Although, there may be a closer north Memphis elementary. Either way, I would not send my children there.

I think Pearlbob is right -- Downtown Elementary.

There is an excellent private Montessori school on the island. I think many--if not most--residents send their children there.

Downtown Elementary certainly isn't the worst of the Memphis City Schools, and I'd imagine it is the district for Mud Island. Here is the state report card for 2008:

Tennessee Department of Education - Report Card - Profile

and for 2007:

Tennessee Department of Education - Report Card - Profile

The school is actually kind of neat looking and in a very urban (and by that I mean business district in the downtown part of a medium sized city...not ghetto) area. I imagine if you went by the school they could confirm the district issue and would give you a tour. The school is on Fourth between Madison and Court near Autozone Park.

The Downtown Elem. is brand new and is nice looking. Fine area. But, the population there is the typical Memphis city population - almost 100% black, which means that the almost 100% white population on the island must be sending their kids to private. Not bringing it into a race thing, but that just showing that obviously the island people don't send their kids there.

I live downtown with my daughter and we both love it. However, no one on the island would send their child to public school. Check the cost of private school and consider that before you move.
