Moving to Memphis Area! (Germantown, Collierville: rental, home, purchasing)

Hello All,

We are moving to the Memphis Area within couple of months, hopefully by August 2017.

Any feedback on the following questions would be greatly appreciated:

- Collierville or Germantown? We are looking for a Good Family/Friendly Orientated Communities (We will be renting for the first 12 months before purchasing a Home).

- Schools, our kid will be starting 7th grade, any recommendations for a good school? is there any schools with full time Gifted Programs? Also, what you recommend for Public or Private Middle Schools?

If you live in a suburb, you'd go to the public school you are zoned for. Either Collierville or Germantown schools would be good. Both are family friendly. Collierville is further out, so if you are working in Memphis or would be going to things in town at night or on weekends, keep that in mind.


If you do private school, you could live anywhere, any state, and attend where you want. Most schools are K-12th, so you'd be choosing a school that you'd want for the long haul. Some are all-boys, all-girls, so it depends on what gender your child is. Most private schools are in Memphis, the larger and more upscale ones in the eastern part. Lausanne is the only private school in the area that is not religious, if that makes a difference to you. However, enrollment for private school was in February, so it would also depend if any of them still have spaces available. You may want to start calling around to see if private is even an option; public schools of course have to take you no matter what.

If your kid is gifted, he'd be a good candidate for the optional program at White Station HS in Memphis, which is an excellent choice. Its located in East Memphis, which is a middle/ upper middle/ upper class area.

Germantown is a more established suburb, but Collerville is almost there an has a better historic town center. Both have excellent public schools.

We plan on moving w/in the next two months and plan on renting for a year before purchasing a home.... Will you share what you learned about the rental community and the area as a whole? I plan on visiting the area in a couple of weeks to scout it out and hopefully find a great home to rent. Currently, leading towards Collierville because of the High School. We also have one child in Middle School. Any
