I am thinking about moving to Memphis for work (husband and wife only, children are grown up) and would appreciate the following advise info.
1. I like water and water activities: what are the pros and cons for moving to Memphis areas close the river (e.g. riverview/ riverfront on Mud Island, South Bluffs)? how come there are so few recreational boats on the river (can one sail, kayak, canoe any place close by)? which are the health clubs with swimming pools with lap lanes?
2. I am Asian; are there good ethnic restaurants (Thai, Korean, japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese) and grocery stores?
3. With Delta having bought out Northwest, would there be less direct flights out of the Memphis airport as the Northwest hub is consolidated to Atlanta?

If you want to live near the water go with Mud Island downtown. Very nice and you'll love it. Most folks who do water activities in Memphis go to either Pickwick Lake in Tennessee or Heber Springs in Arkansas. You really can't do water activities on the Mississippi b/c of the current. You can boat around up and down the river and fish, but not really much else. Don't know about ethnic restaurants. Also, nothing envolving direct flights out of the Memphis International Airport has been affected by the merger. There are many direct flights out Memphis, the only problem is the price. Since Northwest operates a hub here it has made it difficult for Southwest to open up operations here in Memphis. And because of that, Northwest flights out of Memphis are usually high when compared to other airports. Of course, it really doesn't matter if you're not constrained to a budget.
