We're planning to visit Memphis early next year as part of a driving holiday - ostensibly because the good woman wants to see Graceland (and despite my indifference to Elvis I don't have a wooden heart!).
Yet I'm constantly hearing and reading negative views about the city. Surely, it can't be as bad as it's portrayed?

No Memphis is no worse then any other major city. Keep your wits about you and don't walk around looking rich and you will be fine

You shouldn't hate on Elvis. All the ladies were in love with this man. He was without a doubt IMPO in the top 5, no make that 3 Pop Icons this world has ever seen. Everytime I go out of this town or country. When I meet someone and tell them where I'm from it nevers fails, they reply "Oh, your from Elvis's hometown"

As far as places to see while in Memphis. (I wish the powers that be would make a sticky thread on this subject) I will throw out a few and let others chime in

www.backbeattours.com Very entertaing tour that covers several Memphis attractions/historic sites

www.memphiszoo.com Lots of critters you may have never seen

www.cbqmemphis.com Best BBQ in Memphis

www.peabodymemphis.com Duck March 11:00a.m & 5:00p.m. daily

www.memphismuseums.org You may find something that peaks your intrest here also

Enjoy your stay and keep your head on a swivle. You and your lovely bride will be just fine

It's not that bad. If you've been to another big city, and understand not to walk down the streets at 1AM with pocketfuls of cash, you'll be fine. The links posted by (901) are great...definitely check those out!

You need to go to Sun Records at 706 Union Ave to see where it all started. I consider it to be more important than Graceland. That is the place where Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King and many, many others started out.
