(Sigh) I guess this question belongs here. I am a female, early 70s. I have always enjoyed dancing, and have taken various types of dance classes over the past several years. Most recently, I had been taking belly dance classes (in the evenings) for a couple years until I suffered another blood clot in my leg, which has pretty much resolved. Now for the issue: My heart and mind tells me I would like to return to class, however when the day/time rolls around I find excuses not to go. A part of me just feels unmotivated to get dressed for class and go down there for the hour and then drive home. I have never particularly liked classes in the evening, for one thing even though it's not really all that late. I can't figure out if I just don't want to go to this class, or if I just don't want the evening classes. I really love dancing and don't want to give it up but I just feel torn that I just can't figure out what this is about. I do feel this is more about the mental aspect than physical which is why I am posting this here.

Can anyone here relate? Feeling like you would like to be doing a certain thing but also feeling unmotivated to do it? I don't know if it is just my age but I am becoming a lot more unmotivated in the past year, wondering if world events have anything to do with it.

Absolutely! When I get used to not doing something I used to do, I can get stuck and unmotivated to return to it. Also, getting up and ready can be a demotivator. (Just don't think about it.) I used to downhill ski, but EVERY SINGLE TIME, I wanted to talk myself out of getting up and dressed and heading out in the cold. I always went because I really loved skiing. But yeah, I can relate.

Give it a chance; try going to the evening class and see how you feel about it.

For me, the needed preparation for the activity can be the downer that deters me. If I can just get up and do something spontaneously, I am more likely to do that thing. If I have to get up, get dressed appropriately, find the route to get there, drive myself there, etc, etc, I am more likely to not go. Motivation is strange. What might really motivate one person is like a wet rag for another.

Yes, I think you kind of hit the nail on the head. The fact that a class like this requires being there at a certain time, dressed in a specific type of outfit, driving there, and driving home can just feel like too much. I think I am a type that doesn't like to have a "commitment" if you will, at this age, especially in the evening. Much prefer spontaneous activities.

Thank you, I will eventually return, summer here in Florida just sucks it out of me. Probably feel more motivated when things cool off.
