All of those "cultural" values have been swallowed up by the 21st Century, and nowadays, Mexico is pretty similar to, say, Thailand. It's people who eat hamburgers borrowing money to buy automobiles to drive to Home Depot.

I just found out that the Filipino Parol or that Christmas lantern was rooted to the Pinata design.

Filipino Christmas Parol or Lantern

http://www.myparol.com/myparol/abouttheparol.html

Quote:
The word parol (pronounced “pah-roll” with a rolling "r") comes from the Spanish word for lantern, farol. According to World Book's Christmas in the Philippines, the roots of the parol can be found in the Mexican piñata. The piñata came to Spain from Italy in the 1300's, spread to Mexico and finally came to the Philippines when the Spaniards brought Christianity to the islands. The book A Child's Pasko: Christmas in the Philippines explains that the parol was originally used to light the way to church to attend the daily Misas de Aguinaldo, or Gift Masses, which begin on the 16th of December, and ends with the Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster" at midnight of Christmas eve. The midnight mass is followed by a usually lavish meal at home, which is always anticipated by the kids. The first Misa de Aguinaldo that is held at dawn on December 16th marks the official start of the Christmas season.
Our Pinata is different though, it's palayok or made on clay jar with goodies inside.

Yes the Mexican Pinata and Filipino parol are similar.
Yes we also have our Filipino Pinata with some variation, it's a claypot instead but the idea is just the same.

Empanadas and flan both originally come from Spain and are found in many former Spanish possessions, at least throughout Latin America. I don't know if they're found in Morocco or Equatorial Guinea

I know they all came from Spain and can be found all through out Latin America. But the question is which non Latin American country is similar to Mexico, so Philippines being in Asia and not in Latin America would be the one closest to Mexico given the examples above and being a Spanish colony too...
