I thought this was a great story; after the 43 disappeared (eight from the village of Tecoanapa), locals in over 20 municipalities are removing local police and securing their own areas. And it seems to be working:

It may seem to work, but really not the way you want to run a country. Rule of law is one of the most important innovations in modern history to drive investment and economic well being. Are community police units committed to this? I get it, the existing police are a corrupt mess, but this can't be more than a very short term solution.
