When we lived at Lake Chapala (Ajijic) 2008--2012 we used a local mail forwarding company; they use a Laredo TX warehouse where our US mail would be sent, then they transport the mail to Lake Chapala once or twice a week (and we'd pick it up at their office).
We are moving back to Ajijic next month, but will maintain a US home for the next few years. We will fly back and forth, probably ever 3 or 4 months to look in on our US home for a few weeks, see doctors as needed.
We get very little important mail....our US utilities and banks/brokers/cc's are paperless with auto pay. However, there's always a piece of unexpected mail a few times a month.
Is anyone using a virtual mail service with scanning and hold or mail options? Pros and cons??
I understand MailBoxes still operates in Mexico. Actually, you may find a branch in Guadalajara

There is another business like that located at Guadalajara downtown. It used to be a franchise but today they are called "shop&mail" Ishop & Mail
That's what we've used in past....there are 3 at Lake Chapala.
But are considering using a virtual one, based in US. Where they scan the envelope and email them to you. If you want, they will open and scan the contents of envelope, and email to you. Or, you can ask them to not open, and instead to physically mail or UPS/FedEx them to you.
Are you giving your virtual address to banks and other financial institutions? There have been cases here at Lake Chapala where banks have closed accounts and brokers have closed accounts of expats because their mail fwding service.

Yes. Not only do I use it for my banks but Virtual Post Mail has a service where they can even deposit any checks that come to you. Deposit Your Checks Online From Anywhere
I used it several times and it worked really well. I tried a few but this company was the best. I never had any problems at all with them.
Thanks for the info. For awhile, the US banking/financial laws were giving US banks fits and after a few costly rulings against some banks, they were actually seeking to find expats using 'fake' forwarding mailing addresses. That seems to have calmed down (it was very bad per many friends in 2013/2014).

Ah yeah I lived abroad in South America for 8 years. I think things now with the electronic age have improved drastically and all these banks are more understanding.
Yep. They will send you a scan of each document. It was great for packages as I could get it shipped here and then I could choose for them to mail it to me wherever I was. I'd travel frequently and sometimes when I was in the USA on business or business trip, I'd just have them overnight it to the hotel I was at. It was very convenient.
