I think the traditional courses are one way to go, but you could also go another route and put an ad on craigslist or at a local supermarket (Hispanic) looking for a Spanish teacher with experience. You will probably get responses from many ex teachers and professors from their former countries who no longer work in that field. You will get native speakers with minimal Spanglish...and personalized attention for less than a course.

In the meantime, train your ear by listening to Spanish tv and radio. If you can, copy the lyrics to some tunes and sing along.
Do not let people scare you with comments about Spanglish, different acents and dialects. At the end of the day it's the same language.

Check your local library for CDs. I checked out the Pimsleur Spanish I and II CDs, which teach like Rosetta Stone, and copied them to my ipod. Rosetta is expensive and won't let libraries have access to their content. Library is free!

Also, a great way to learn another language is to have a conversation with someone that speaks that said language, it's one of the best ways to learn the language, pronounciation, and everything else. For example, be with a friend and tell him/her to speak to you in Spanish. Be in a group where everyone is speaking Spanish. You get what I'm saying? watch their body language so you get an idea of what they mean.

This is true because for example, a couple of my little nephews and nieces didn't know English at first and they learned it in less than a year because of school. All they speak is English in schools. I have some relatives that have lived here for years and their English is still ehhhhh LOL

It helps a lot when you do this at YOUNG age and your brain is still developing. Once you get to say your teenage years or later it becomes harder....though by no means impossible.
