Chickens are tropical birds and they thrive in areas like Miami and the Lower Keys without any need of human intervention. I doubt that their massive populations in Miami and the Lower Keys are being threatened at all by rogue drivers and Santeria priests.

These guys aren't threatened. We had two chickens in our neighborhood once and man can they be annoying. They don't kakadoodle dew just in the morning, it can be in the middle of the day. And if they roost in a tree near your bedroom window ohh it is not wonderful hearing them go on and on in the morning. I think someone finally caught them. It is just part of the latin culture though, but it isn't part of the counties rules. Someone will call the county at some point.

i like the chickens. even if theyre obnoxious. they did keep me up in puerto rico though. i guess id just get used to ear plugs if i had them living by me. i grew up in california in a mexican barrio that gentrified until theyre million dollar homes now. all around me it was mostly mexican families growing corn, tomatos, etc and id hear chickens in the morning. so i'm even a little nostalgic.

I'm not against the chickens, but is the city doing something to protect these poor animals from cars and religious people??
i would imagine santeros probably take good care of their chickens before dispatching them. if you're offering something as a sacrifice it makes sense for it to be of sacrificial quality.

Wow chickens are cool now because you can see them in Brickell. I grew up with chickens in Hialeah, even had them as pets. In fact, I lived across a street from a fruit stand that sold coconuts, guarapo, and chicks. Somehow people see chickens as 3rd world if they are in a trailer park in Hialeah, cool if they peck and cluck in the urban core.
