From Fort Lauderdale area to Miami, need info on best areas (Miami Beach: apartment, townhome)

I live in the Fort Lauderdale area, my wife is possibly getting a job at Mt Sinai on Miami Beach. We live in the Weston area currently having moved around several times with rents going up the past few years. We have been to Miami several times but as much as I hate to admit it we don't get there as often as we like and do not know the area that well.

Seeing that we both agree a commute would be brutal, we are looking at relocating closer. I work from home currently in a remote position.

We both know Miami is expensive, rents are high and it's often more crowded, is there any parts within a decent drive of Mt.Sinai that we could get a townhome with a garage for under $2,000 a month? How would traffic be, we both know it's bad in Miami but anything to avoid the worst commute. Would like to avoid apartment living if possible. We also have a medium sized Dog which we found pet friendly is hard to find.

Hmm...perhaps somewhere in Miami Shores or Aventura. Miami Beach isn't a very good location for those looking to avoid traffic (as you have to join up with the traffic going to/leaving downtown on the mainland).
