Hi, so I am moving to Miami from Germantown, TN in June 2015! I am going to work in a Jackson Memorial Hospital. I am moving with my wife and two kids (One in an elementary and one in a Middle school). What I figured out that if I live near metrorail stations e.g. south Miami, dadeland north, and dadeland south, then it will be easy commute for me. It seems that public schools are also good in those areas (south Miami middle, Palmetto Middle, and Kenwood k-8). Can you guys suggest me good apartments for family in those areas? I am looking for a 2bedroom apartment and my budget is around $1500/month. How are the apartments near south Miami metrorail station? Sunset square and Palm plaza seems good, but those are only few blocks away from a rough area north to south Miami metrostation. Are those apartments are located in a safe area? What would be my options near Dadeland north and Dadeland south metrostations?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

I don't have suggestions for specific buildings, maybe somebody else does. But you are on the right track given your price point: older buildings in the South Miami/Dadeland/Pinecrest area.

Keep looking in the Dadeland area south of Kendall Drive (88th St.) for the Kendall PK-8 school district and in Pinecrest for Palmetto Middle: I believe those are safer bets than South Miami.

In any case, to afford a newer building, you need to increase your price point above $2,000.

As a result, I would suggest that if you are enjoying your current lifestyle in Memphis, you should think twice about coming to Miami to a job that cannot afford you at least around $2300 per month for rent, plus other necessary expenses.

Good Luck!

Yea I think your looking in the right direction don't listen to poor souls on this board who constantly complain about everything and Welcome to Florida. Your price range is decent for that area so my best advice is to make a trip down here and see If you like the area.

Does any one have suggestions for apartment complexes? Which school is considered better South Miami Middle or Palmetto Middle? On GreatSchools website South Miami Middle is 10/10 and Palmetto Middle is 8/10. But I heard that Palmetto is better.

My guess would Palmetto Middle would be better, but that's just a guess. Kendall Drive and just east of US1 there are apartment complexes. There are also rentals in those new high rises at the last Metrorail station Dadeland South, not sure what the rents are like though. If you go west of US1 on Kendall Drive there are a bunch of apartment complexes along Kendall Drive. If you do a google street view on Kendall Drive heading west from US1 you'll be able to get the names of the complexes (Nob Hill is one just past the 874 expressway). I would however staying as close to US1 as possible so you can easily access the Metrorail for work.

BTW, best of luck at Jackson, your going to need it. From what I hear. My sister has worked with doctors and nurses that have worked there, and she's told me she'd never ever work there after hearing stories about that place. All the best to you.

Goodluck on getting an apartment by Kendall/South Miami. Metrorail is very convenient to get to Jackson Memorial. I work across the street (Veterans Affairs). Jackson is a busy place but you will learn a lot. I did clinical rotations at Jackson during undergrad years

I live by the area you're looking in and its very, very safe and popular. There are a lot of little apartment buildings but what i found when searching was that most didn't have anything listed on line. Just basically search the apartment areas behind and around the Winn-Dixie off of 74th st. and you should be able to find something good. Also, in front of UM and behind US-1 (not on ponce though, the other side of US-1 behind the strip malls) there are a lot of nice looking apartments that often cater to students so you should be more than safe. Plus, you have the university metro station right there. Dadeland has a few, something called "Bermuda..." I can't remember and another one called "Palm place" or something that looked nice but were always full because they're very in demand. If you have a chance to drive around, do so - you will find many apartments that are not listed online for some reason (also try Mayan towers here) and look for apartments owned by a group called GFLP or something that owns like 10 apartments in the area and can give you a lot of places to search.
