This is subjective - what qualities are you looking for in "the best"?

Incidentally, there is a Key Lime Pie Contest in Tavernier at MM95 every year at Key Lime Products - they judge best traditional pie, and best creative version (which can be different colors, include additional flavors, etc.) If you were really looking to find the best, I would go to that and sample a large variety. Year-round they serve a popular version there frozen - both regular, and on a stick dipped in chocolate. But that version is similar to Edward's frozen key lime, which can be found at Publix. It is a pale yellowish, sweet but not too sweet, fatty version with a good crumbly crust, and tangy flavor. But it is more on the creamy than eggy side.

You may be aware that Publix itself sells regular and mango key lime pie, but I find Publix baked good reprehensible and loaded with chemicals. When I first moved to Miami, I tried the mango key lime flavor, and could not really understand where they got the name from - it seemed rather bland to me, with no distinctive mango flavor, and barely any lime flavor either.

If you search the Keys coupon booklets that are found at every tourist site here, most places will have a coupon for a free or discounted key lime pie slice - so it is very easy to roam around performing your own taste test, if you don't mind what that will ultimately do to your body.

For me, Key Lime pie is so rich, it's best enjoyed only once every year or two so it still feels special.

You can make a healthy parfait version using fresh key lime juice and vanilla lowfat yogurt, topped with things like oatmeal and chia seeds to simulate the crunchy crust, and I personally find it equally delicious if not more so, plus you can make it in just minutes. That might be a good alternative if you crave the flavor often but don't want to give yourself a heart attack and/or diabetes.

I make an easy, not traditional Key lime pie. I bake a pie crust. I mix one can of Eagle Brand condensed milk, 1/3 to 1/2 cup Key lime juice, and a container of Cool Whip. I place the mixture in the baked pie crust and sprinkle a little lime zest over the top of the pie. I place in the refrigerator.

I know that Cool Whip has trans fats..... but I make this pie only 2 - 3 times a year. It has always been a hit at potlucks and at work.

Ma's Fish Camp in Islamorada has a reputation for great Key Lime pie, although I've never had the pleasure of trying it for myself.

Lol, side effect of writing food-related threads.

I've never tried Ma's Fish Camp, because I'm vegetarian so a fish house does not appeal. But if you don't mind a crowd, go on the Thursday of the month when the Morada Way Art Walk is going on. It's a great time, and right near Ma's Fish Camp so you can park for both at the same time. Drive slowly and circle around, eventually you should find a spot to park. Last month's St. Patrick's Day walk was amazing, and reminded me actually of walking through Greenwich Village in NYC on a holiday with so many people dressed up in outrageous St-Patty's-themed costumes. Bring cash if you're going to want to buy a souvenir or some street food.
