Hi,

My daughter is attending FIU. Could you suggest apartments/studios/houses of rent Max $1000 as she missed on campus housing deadline. She cant afford a car hence need near by location. Safety is our first concern. I have been seeing mixed reviews on crime in cities and about the police.

Does anyone on these boards have any input into which areas I should look? Any specific areas to avoid? Any reputable apartment complexes or the like to which I should pay attention?

Thank you

Sasha, $1000 is a low rent for Miami. Any chance she can find someone to split a place? Usually rents for a 1 bedroom are in the $1300-1400 range, just for a basic sort of place.

Sweetwater isn't the swankiest place, but it definitely is walkable to the university. Otherwise, there's the option of taking the bus.

The apartment buildings in the area are either smaller and older or new and expensive. Here's an example of one of those: https://classifieds.fiu.edu/property...stingid/148230. Note that the rent is PER ROOM... so the rent for the full unit is actually about 3600 per month.

Hi Sasha, I am also going to FIU and staying at the apartment complex 4th Street Commons. It's across the street from FIU, was just built a little over a year ago. It's really nice, they have a great security guard -- especially at night. You must have a key to access/use the elevator and the only way people are allowed in is if the person living in the apartment comes down to get their guest. Everyone in the building either walks to school or takes the CAT shuttle, which has a schedule and runs all day to take students to the school. It's one block away from the police station as well. I am staying in a 4x4, and the lowest rent for this option is $832. However, there are other options for 4x4s, and they do also have studio, 1 bed and 2 bed apartments. They may have a limited number of these options, so if you call I'm sure they will answer all your questions. Go to 4thstreetcommons.com and their number is there.
