Hello all,

I'm currently living in London, England and plan to relocate with my fiance to either the San Diego area or Miami in the fall.

We're both 33 years old and are looking for a city with a bit of buzz about it (basically not dull). But we also would like a high quality of life where we can enjoy doing things outdoors.

We've been told that Carlsbad, CA might be a great area for us in the San Diego area. From everything I've heard it sounds very appealing.

We've both visited Miami before and enjoyed South Beach but we want to know about how the quality of life is there.

So if anyone can give any insight on the comparison of living in these 2 cities I'd really appreciate it!!

lol...well, I would say San Diego. Miami is a wonderful place to visit, and many people (like me!) fall in love with it based on it's gorgeous people and beaches. But living in Miami Beach for me was horrible - in a nutshell, I found it to be a stressful and miserable quality of life. You should def read other's opinions about Miami on this message board....I wish I had

I do think there are some people who like living in Miami so be sure to get their perspective. But make sure they have actually LIVED there, not visited!!! I have a friend who lives south of Miami (Kendall?) and has a great job, she does like living there.

I'd be glad to answer any other specific questions if you want to PM me.

I've never been to San Diego but I hear it's beautiful but expensive? Good luck to you!!!

I haven't lived in California yet. But oh would I move there in a heart beat if I had the choice too. Carlsbad is great you will not be disappointed. I vote California.

If you like doing things outside then San Diego would be #1 on the list of major cities in the US and Miami would be near the bottom. If you like 95 degrees with heat indexes of 110 for 8-9 months of the year and daily thunderstorms then you might like Miami on the other hand San Diego is considered to have probably the best weather in the US.You'll need plenty of money to enjoy living in either city but overall quality of life is 100% better in San Diego.

3 votes San Diego, 0 votes Miami...actually, make that 4 votes for San Diego Never been there, but I couldn't imagine it is worse than Miami in any way. San Diego always tops those "Best City" lists, while Miami consistently tops the "Worst City" lists. Miami has a slightly lower cost-of-living, but I would suspect you're getting a WAY better quality of life over there.

Hold on there. Not everyone would agree that San Diego is the place to be. Yes, over Miami, definately, but there are other parts of Florida I would choose over San Diego. The beaches in Florida are much better IMO. San Diego beaches are often polluted, always cold and seldom can you find parking. People in most of Florida are less superficial (with the exception of Miami and Palm beach and Boca) Housing afforability, of course, is a major problem in SD. Florida isn't cheap anymore but everything is way more expensive in CA. Also, the traffic in SD is really terrible. I spent waaay too much time in my car there.

To the OP, if you are open to other options besides Miami, you might not want to rule out Florida just yet.

San Diego..the weather is GLORIOUS compared to us. Probably more expensive to live there...but believe me, you will love San Diego much much more.

I've lived in Miami for most of my life and visit San Diego once a year as I have a timeshare there. A VERY short list of what I've concluded as I have considered moving to San Diego myself:

Miami's Pros: Better Beaches (Clean) , Nightlife, Cost of living is far less (Housing and Gas)

San Diego's Pros: Weather, Laid Back atmosphere, People

Carlsbad is very laid back and I would not describe it as having any type of buzz at all. Personally, I'd check out Little Italy for an urban, hip feel. South Beach is nothing like Carlsbad, and if that's what you're looking for in San Diego you're not going to find it. I've compared both cities alot and San Diego is alot more expensive to live in than Miami...by far. San Diego is a surfer city and very mellow whereas South Beach is trendier-fashion minded and has a party scene. Pacific Beach is closest thing to SOBE as it has Bars and restaurants but everything is more casual and not upscale. Downtown San Diego is where you go for a nightlife (clubs, upscale restuarants) but everything closes at 1am. It all depends on what you want..

I'd definitely visit San Diego before moving...check out the San Diego City Forum and get more info from them. So do yourself a favor -visit before you move and decide for yourself. If money was not an object (which it always is) I would pick San Diego and live in La Jolla. Hope this helped!
