Hello all! I am new to this board and I am really glad I found it. Well, we are in a bit of a situation. Here it is....
My husband, fourteen year old daughter, sweet cat and myself are looking at moving back to Coral Springs Florida. We moved there in May 2004 b/c my husband was working for FPL. We left and came back to Texas b/c we felt we would not ever be able to have a home due to how expensive the housing was out there. We have been doing way worse since we moved back. My husband has had a really hard time finding work in Texas and it seems that there are jobs opening up in his field in the Miami/ Hialeah area. We were only in Coral Springs for 1 year, but we really enjoyed it. We lived at the Promenade at Wyndham Lakes and our daughter was in Junior High at the time and went to Coral Springs Middle School. I never felt unsafe there. The hurricanes were not so bad either. There were mostly like northerns here in Texas. I miss it there, but we are very concerned due to the crime in the state. Right now we are in the Austin area and we have just lost our home in foreclosure. It is happening everywhere. We are getting ready to file for Bankruptcy due to my husband being laid off from his job. Can someone really please give us some advice on if we should consider moving back. I am getting the impression that if we drive down the street we could be shot.
Thanks,
sc

untimately it will be your decision. The real estate market is in the crap house everywhere, so it is a buyers market if you can sell your home in TX.

Now, I dont recommend buying a house in Hialeah or anywhere around Hialeah, except Miami Lakes or Palm Springs North.

Coral Springs to Miami/Hialeah area is a drive, unless your husband doesnt mind the drive

The crime in the state has gone down for probably the 10th consecutive year. Florida is now the 9th most dangerous state, down from numero uno a few years back. Still not great but an improvement, not a "OH, ITS NEVER LYK EVER BEEN WORSE OMG IM GONAN GET SHOT UNLESS I GO TO NORTH CAROLINA".Coral Springs has been nationally ranked as one of the safest cities in the whole country over the past couple of years, cresting at number 10 last year. I don't know what these people are talking about when they say there is some kind of crime wave. Yes, homicide is going up, but typically this isn't random people getting shot for money, these are domestic murders occurring in the home over arguments and relationship issues. Miami is the same as it always was, a little sketchy, and Broward is probably a tad safer than when you left, despite some spikes in crime over this year (it was worse 5-10 years ago by far). Property crime has been going down and fallen below the national average and violent crime has been going up, although robberies have remained relatively steady.

Now, what there HAS been is a steady change in the TYPE of incidents. Some of the stuff happening has just been downright barbaric and scary. You have the Boca Town Center case, the officers being gunned down, the incident in Wendy's in WPB. Robbers are using assault weapons. These type of incidents are escalating all over the country, so I honestly don't know where we go to escape. On the bright side, your chance of being a victim of this type of incident is lower than being bit by a shark, but it makes for a really scary newscast. People might say I'm "desensitized", but if you read threads on the forum about violent crimes that were occurring in other states, they literally pretend it doesn't exist. IE, when the cop got gunned down in Atlanta, the Tennessee mass murder. Talk about rose colored glasses. And believe me, my heart is shaken every time I see something like that, no matter where it is...and after traveling a bit, watching the newscast in every city breaks my heart...

However, most of these people are delusional drama queens, plain and simple. Coral Springs is a safer city than when you left, and so is Hialeah. However, if you are working in Hialeah you are going to want to be living in west Pembroke Pines, Weston, Cooper City, Davie, or another area that gives you easy access to I-75. If you liked Coral Springs you will like these areas too, they are a little quieter and very safe. As a whole a bit less congested too, exception being Pembroke Pines, and your commute down I-75 is pretty easy, as long as you don't have to be on the Palmetto for too long. You won't really hit any additional traffic coming in from Coral Springs, but I'm not a huge fan of living too far from work if you don't have to, and that's adding an extra 30 minutes of driving.

Like compelled said, the best option if you work in Hialeah is to live in Southwest Broward ( West Pembroke Pines, Weston, Cooper City,... ).

But if you work in Miami ( Downtown Miami ), I would recommend Coral Gables, South Miami ( East of US-1 ), Dadeland / East Kendall and Pinecrest; all these neighborhoods are safe and good overall, the only problem are the schools ( all bad, except Pinecrest ), but you can put your daughter in a Charter School.

I live in MIA get out while you can!!! They will give your job to someone who is willing to take it for less money, the foreclosure rate here is horrible my mom is paying 8,000 on taxes and ins and is about to loose her house, I can't even afford to live here, I am going to school and saving money to get out!!!I just had a son and am moving, I would not want my children to grow up the the school system that I did, you had a comment about hurricanes I guess you didn't go through andrew we lost everything!! You had a comment about being fear of being shot, my husband worked in a night club downtown club life next door to club space(so it was called at the time) there was a shootout there while he was working, and he never went back to work!! Listen while all the tourist are at calle ocho and parades and stuff, we sit home because we know the potential of what could happen out there. Check this out when we go to the beach we go to las olas in fort lauderdale we don't even hang here don't mean to scare you but especially if you have children get out!!
