We have been hearing about how cold its been in areas even in south Florida and have been seeing the low temperature reports in the bigger cities, but wondering if anyone here in the smaller cities/rural areas know how low they dropped to in south FL?

I saw where Tallahassee dropped to 14° and that was not much more that our low, which was 18° below average on Wednesday night! Thats bone chilling, even for northern Florida and that is even 13° below our normal low for this time of year. Unbelievable.

Other lows - Jacksonville dropped to 20°. Perry dropped to 17°. Crestview dropped to 16°. I guess there were some isolated lows in the lower 10s in some rural areas around Tallahassee. I wonder how some of the "less hardy" palm trees handle that? I have a Windmill Palm here at my house in northeast Tennessee I have had for 6 years - never a problem, but the coldest low we had was 8°. This year, its been much harsher. We dropped to 5° twice in January and it really hurt it. Its a ugly burnt green color now, but I think it will recover in the spring, because they are supposed to be able to withstand temps to -2°. I also Southern Live Oak trees, which are not native here, but they have taken the NE Tennessee mountain winters with stride. I also amazingly have some Spanish Moss in some of my Cypress trees that I have had for 3 years. I bought it our of Orlando FL. Alot of it has died, but alot of it has held its on. The birds took alot of it.

Big warmup for us all in the southeast... supposed to be 61° here on Saturday.

Thanks for all of that info. Sounds like everyone has been enjoying it.

It was 65° at my house today, which is well above average for us.

Strange though to see tonight that here in northeast Tennessee that we are running 10-15° milder than most of north Florida. @ 2am, Ocala is 39° and Jacksonville is 40° and we are 53°.... even up into western West Virginia, they are in the lower 60s now.

I'm about halfway between Daytona beach and Orlando and one night it went below 30 degrees outside but the wind chill was even lower.

The power company here had problems because they weren't used to the demand and some people at the coldest time of the night lost power. SO once I heard that, I got out the wool blankets that I kept when I moved here (thinking I should get rid of them) and a couple flashlights. I couldn't imagine how bad it would have been loosing power because of how cold it was outside.

One morning I wished I still had my windshield scraper (something my daughter doesn't even know what it is). Instead I had to sit there and wait for the car to heat up and wonder if windshield wiper fluid sold in this area had an antifreeze type product in it like in New England. I am SO ready for this to be over.

We lost power as well during one of those cold outbreaks because of electrical overloads at a power station. Lows in the single digits are rare, even here in the mountains of northeast Tennessee.

Its good now though... even here its been in the 60s and 70s for the past two days and 70s for the next 2 days, which is above normal for us this time of year.

The lowest it hit here in Miami was 32 with windchills in the 20s on Thursday. That's insane cold! I heard Tallahassee hit 14 and the rest of the state was in the 10-20s.
