What do you call humulliations? I have been traveling for years to Latin American and Europe before and after 911 and I have always been asked the same questions. Who packed your bag? Where do you work? Why did you travel? How long did you stay? What's the address of your workplace? It's standard procedure. I never had issues with the USA immigration or customs officials in Miami. By the way for those of you who might not know, I would say 99% of the immigration and custom officials are either Anglos or African Americans, not latinos with bad attitude.

Blame Richard Reed the shoe bomber, not the Patriotic Act. He tried to blow up an airplane heading to MIA from London. Maybe some people on this forum had family or friends on that plane. Taking our shoes off is a pain, yes, but it's better than visiting a grave.

Reed's SAM's (Special Administrative Measures) were allowed to expire recently so I guess he'll be plotting and planning more jihadist activites.

I don't have any issues with this airport or any other airport in Europe and latin America, but then again I speak Spanish.
The OP is referring to the Customs area. I had to go through US customs at MIA when I flew back from Barbados several months ago and I remember those arrows. It was the most confusing process I have ever gone through at an airport - I was sure I was going to get lost, but the people were fine. I will try very hard to avoid going through Customs at MIA ever again.

I think you are referring to Immigration (custom is where they check your bags, immigration is where they ask you the weird questions & check your passport) Yes the walk is long, but no matter where you go the only exit there is gonna be those immigration lines, just follow the people. All international flights get there and that is why is so confusing for some people.

MIA is a much bigger airport and depending on your needs, you can fly from FT Lauderdale and many times save some money. Many flights are not available from FT Lauderdale. I really don't think it's the airport's fault, some people are just not used to big airports. If I had to name a bad airport, Atlanta would be my pick.

Tampa sucks. Their tram system is really bad, since it goes to where ever it wants and the employees at the airport have no idea how to direct you to the proper platform.

The tram only goes from the main building to its respective airside terminal. There are no stops along the route. It's very, very straightforward.

Since March I've had a better option: my own plane. Even though it is about 1/3 the speed of a commercial jet, if I am going to a city that requires a transfer (i.e. not a hub city) I can often get there in the same amount of time when you factor in the security time, change planes time, etc. I only use MIA ( or FLL) for really long distance flights or if the ticket is cheap due to a promotional rate. I also agree that the security people there are rude and mean.
I can't say your info is all that accurate. MIA is more expensive because it's the major airport in the area...this is no different than other places with multiple commercial airports, as other have mentioned. Plus, I don't see a big difference in fares anymore unless you're flying a carrier that only flies to FLL (i.e. Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, etc)

Duringhigh travel season all the fares are the same. American Airlines is very good at matching other airlines fares even Spirit and Jet Blue. I find AA is the cheapest for the flights I look for 80% of the time.
