Are there any MDFR firefighters in this room? If so, could you please give me an accurate figure on what a new firefighter/emt could make in their first two years at MDFR? I have all special ops classes and I'm a Rescue Diver. I currently have 10 yrs in the fire service and I'm on FRS retirement. I would definitely go to medic school if I was hired down there. Do you guys have an in house medic school? Also, I always hear about how you can basically pick the overtime when you want. Is this true? Thanks.

Greetings. How can you have 10 years on and already be retired ? Did you retire from somewhere else and then started working at your dept ? Pretty nice gig.

I do know that they don't have in-house medic program....you need to go either to Miami Dade college or Broward College to get that done. Also, everything is frozen for the time being and they just offered a test a couple of months ago. So they will not be testing again until appx 2 year from now. As far as salary...check for yourself : http://www.miamifly.net/watchdog/dat...h/db/employee/

Good luck.

I don't know if they will eventually bring you on at a higher salary because of your experience, but you should be making in the $50's or $60's 3 years in with overtime and whatnot.

Heydade's right though, they just had an application process, and NOTHING's going on with it right now. According to the budget that was released, all training classes are cancelled for 2009-2010 fiscal year. If they don't scrap the list and have folks reapply, they'll go for the veterans first, then they're most likely to go for folks with certs next.

It will get tougher and tougher as times goes on, but the good news is there's no age restriction. I do know a guy that was brought on with no certs in his early 30's.

We shall see...

Are we even hiring firefighters right now? With the salaries of the lieutenants and chiefs grossly inflated from overtime and from the past economy- theyre absorbing about 100 million in city salary. The overtime issue has been ragged on in the press for about a year now. Also, there was an article about the last time we were hiring fire rescue workers in the city of Miami (with or without qualifications)- and for 12 openings 1200 people showed up and got in line all day.

There were 35 openings for firefighter in City of Miami. They are actively hiring and getting close to filling their first class.

The county has a presently ongoing hiring process, but it's frozen.

It has 35 openings, but didn't like 1000+ people apply for those 35 positions already?

Yes. The application process is closed for all departments. City of Miami has proceeded with final interviews and are starting to line people up for their class, mostly veterans.
