There was a very nice resort in Oscoda. Called El. Coretz It was a very decent place, now I heard that it was sold and new owners took over. thing is when new people take over. it can never be the same. prices will go up.just wondering if any one knows any thing bout it. some times when places change ownership they still try to work with the old people that goes there over year.the old owners were so very nice its a pity they sold it.

The Lake Huron side is the cheapest as far as Great Lakes resorts go. Reason is, it's all about the few beaches they have,(much of the East is swamp, and private owned beaches) and nothing more. Unlike the Lake Michigan side, the Lake Huron side has no culture, NONE. No fine dining, no events, nothing. Just empty cottages, and dead little hillbilly towns that are all but deserted the first sign of fall. Lexington and Tawas is as good as it gets until you head further North to Mackinac City. So don't worry, if it goes up, it won't be much. Now if it was in the West side of the state near Traverse City for example, then you'd have reason for concern about the price. Lake Huron side? No.

Well, that review seems unnecessarily harsh. I really like the "Sunrise Side" of Michigan and not everyone is looking for constant "entertainment". That stretch of beach along US-23 south of Oscoda is among the best you'll find.

Highwayguy09, as you know, prices for everything everywhere have gone up. These little "mom 'n' pop" places have changed hands – some frequently – over the years as they have to make their year's income in about three months a year – enough to live on and maintain the properties. Some owners reach retirement age and want to do something different. It's true that nothing stays the same but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable.

When I was a kid, my family stayed next door at what was then called Huronic Beach Resort (now Sandcastle) several summers. My cousin's family stayed at El Cortez. As an adult, I took my kid and I have stayed at four or five of the old places from south of Oscoda north to Greenbush. Personally, I enjoy the old knotty pine cottages and I don't go there for fine dining – I go there to relax, kick back and enjoy the beach. Some of us manage to entertain ourselves. I've lived in Texas for 40 years but when I go back to Michigan, I always try to get to that area for a couple of days.

Do a search for "El Cortez" and you'll find a couple of youtube videos. If you're in the Detroit area, why not drive up this summer? Sometimes, during the week, if there's an opening you can get a place for a day or two without a reservation and it won't cost an arm and a leg.
