Given the choice between Gaylord and Midland, I'd go with Gaylord hands down. Myself personally though, I wouldn't want to live in Gaylord. It's a great town, and I love all the stores , coffee shops and some of the restaurants downtown but , and believe it or not the place gets busy. Too busy for my liking.

Now I've never lived up there but do have a cottage about 25 miles east of Gaylord. So I play the weekend warrior and go up there every chance I get, dreaming of the day I can move up there. I've been told by many locals that I've befriended that the dream for many that move up there isn't so great when they finally do move. Winters are tough and long. Traveling to doctors and things can be long and some just don't end up liking the country life.
If I had a choice, of where I could move up there I think Indian River, Charlevoix , and East Jordan would be some of the places I'd look. Another beautiful area but I think winters would be really tough is Hessel and the Les Cheneaux Islands. That is probably a better place to just visit. Since we already have the cottage, and it's on a small lake just north of Lewiston, I'm pretty sure that is where we will end up after retirement.

Good luck in wherever you choose though.
