We are looking at relocating to the St. Ignace/Mackinaw city area. I've looked up a lot of information online but would like an insider opinion about raising a family there, schools, shopping, housing (we would be renting for while) prices.

Thanks

If you need to work, I wouldn't count on it much. In St. Ignace many of the summer shops didn't even reopen this summer due to the economy. Mackinaw you may find a job, but only in summer months. Shoppings you'd have to drive either to the Soo, Cheboygan or Petoskey. Schools are, well, ok.

We just moved from the Petoskey/Harbor Springs area this past September after living there most my life.

I'm not sure what your motivation for moving to St. Ignace is, but I would highly recommend visiting in the dead of winter. If you're compelled by the charm of it all in the summer, then you need to know that hardly anything is open in the winter and it's like a ghost town.

I don't live there, so locals might have a different view. I just live in the UP and drive through there a lot. I don't think many people spend all year there.

Thats what I was worried about. It would be for my husband, a job opening with the tribal health clinic. I could live with the ghost town, I don't think he can.

I don't mean to scare you away. There is still a bar or two open, some restaurants. It just becomes a very locals' situation.

My wife and I own a piece of property up in St Ignace out east of town on highway 2. I would have to say the same for job opp's. I believe that most of the hustle and bustle comes in the summer months. You would want to look for employment opp's in Cheboygan, Petosky, Mackinaw or the Soo. The Soo would be your farthest drive at about about 75 miles. Beautiful area, but not much in the way of work.

And a first class PITA drive in the winter. I wouldn't want to make that drive every day during Dec, Jan, and Feb. Made it a few times because the car knew where it was going I think, because I sure shouldn't have been on the highway in that kind of weather.
