MI actually has a higher cost of living which surprises people. When you start looking at buying a property, you will also notice that property taxes seem to be a bit higher than other states. At one time, it was cheaper to rent than own but now with the housing crisis it tends to be cheaper to own than rent now. The best part about renting is if you feel you made a mistake, you simply move when the lease is up. Give Canton a try, if it doesn't fit the bill, try out the surrounding areas next. When its time to really invest in a property, you will have lived there long enough to know what is best for you regarding the setting roots.

So, I visited the areas over the weekend and decided that Canton is the best fit for me. But oh man... that area does look congested. That Ford Road is full of traffic at any given time of the day.

Canton and Livonia seem good for your situation. I've lived in both, they're both great areas.

Default help w apartments, Canton, Belleville, Ypsilanti

You all seem to have helpful information. I am looking to relocate to the Canton, Belleville, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor area and am looking for information about the safest choice for apartment complexes. Every review I read on line makes them all sound scary. I have a tiny budget and must live within 20 minutes of Willow Run Airport. Any suggestions on the best, and the ones to avoid? Any help would be appreciated!

^ I think Canton would be your best bet. Not sure about the price. But I would start there and see if you can find something in your budget. Anything south of Ford Road would be an easy 20 minute commute to Willow Run Airport.

Default Canton is really your only smart option.

The commute from Plymouth and Canton is exactly the same (they even share the same school district). As for Plymouth over Canton, that argument can only be had 10 years ago. Canton is now more diverse, has far greater resources when it comes to what they offer the community, has not had to cut back because, even Canton surpassed Plymouth City and Township in median income, they were still conservative enough to not be in debt. Canton is like the Novi/Northville/Plymouth/Canton Western-Wayne County bloc; it's conservative but inclusive. There is money in all, but it's not shown like some towns.
To be honest, of the communities you listed, Livonia is fine if you want to live, literally, in the whitest city in the country, which the culture to go with it. The others are not to be considered.
Canton is where you should be looking, and from getting an apt before you make the commitment to buy, to townhouses, condo's, detached condo's and single family residences, you can't go wrong.
Born in Canton, lived in Manhttan, came back to Canton. Lived in Chicago, came back to Canton. Need I say more?
