It would be nice and I will hope, but the odds are at least even that it was an escaped or released animal.

Actually Michigan was not nicknamed the Wolverine State because of a noticeable Wolverine population. In fact there is debate and doubt whether there really was a viable population of wolverines, even in the old days.

The reason why Michigan was called the Wolverine state had more to do with how soldiers or settlers were tough or fought like Wolverines dating back to war of 1812 I think or something like that. Same with why Wisconsin is the badger state. There are no more badgers in Wisconsin than there are in other states (they are there certainly).

Default Wolverine

The consecutive losses to the Spartans and Ohio State in football as well as having to sit at home and watch MSU go deep in the basketball tournament year after year while UM settles for the NIT, and the NCAA investigations of the football team finally took its toll on the wolverine and it died of a broken heart.

GO SPARTANS!!!!

Its so sad that she died, but I find it rather creepy that Ford wants to have her stuffed and mounted. Wouldn't it be better to have pictures of her displayed, and she be given a dignified burial?

Wolverines are extremely secretive and difficult to study. They are known for their ability to travel long distances. It does not seem logical that this wolverine was an exotic pet let loose. Captive animals lose their hunting instincts and skills, and usually starve when released into the wild. At 28 pounds, this was very large for a female, and indicates that she was well fed. Would bet money that there are other wolverines in Michigan, but may not find them for years. An example of wolverines popping up in unexpected places happened a couple of years ago in California. An Oregon State graduate student working on another project in a rugged, remote region northwest of Lake Tahoe took photos of a wolverine, which have been confirmed by more recent sightings and dna testing of hair and scat samples.

Even the DNR had to admit there are some cougars here last fall. Nature found a way to restore the cougar to Michigan, as well as Wi and Mn. Thirty years ago no one would have ever thought that possible. I dont see why the wolverine could not eventually follow the same path.
Not having read that story or know the history on it...my first instinct is there was some study done to try to introduce the animal back to its native habitat.

Don't know the story for cougars, but people who study such things organized to introduce wolves back into their natural habitat of Yellowstone National Park out west.

Maybe..there was something similar with the cougar? Either that, or it did somehow manage to move into Michigan again on its own...unsure...just an add-on here

There have been long standing rumors about the DNR re-introducing the cougar to certain parts of michigan.
