I thought I'd ask this question since I've noticed a lot on here from different time frames. My "era" is now. I joined the Army in 2009 with the (not so) bright idea of joining the infantry. Been deployed twice, don't ever want to do that again! And now I'm just waiting to be a civilian"

First of all, I'd like to say "Thank you for your service", you being in the combat arms of the military isn't an easy task, especially these days. I served with the Army from 1967-70 and was deployed to Vietnam. I served with the 9th ID for 18 months from Jan 69 to Oct 1970.

I once asked my uncle (a vietman vet) the difference between his war and mine (afghanistan). I was under this impression that our war today couldn't stack up. He told me "combat is combat" I couldn't agree more. He's the only guy in my family I can talk to about that sort of stuff. Talking about combat is all academic unless you've been there lol It was differnent than I thought it would be, I really felt something for the people who lived in that country, they had no choice but to live among all that violence and here I was naive enough to sign up for it. That haunts me more than any IED or firefight...the thought of what's going to happen to all those people living there. It was a tough pill to swallow realizing that not everybody there was a combatant. I think more Americans need to know that it's not always about sending rounds downrange. Thank you for your comment and service.
