Does anyone have access to military records? Maybe through one of those sites that you pay for?? I think my grandfather was in the military and would like to check. Thanks!

You could try the following address:
National Personnel Records Center
Military Personnel Records
9700 Page Avenue
St Louis, Missouri 63132-5100

Phone number: (314) 801-0800

To make things go faster, direct your inquiry to:
Earlean Jarmon
Archives Technician
Core 2, Team B

Request a DD Form 214

A request can also be handled online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov

It would help greatly if you had a social security and/or a service number to aid in their search.

Go to your local Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), they'll help you.

I know this is a 7 year old thread!

I'm getting ready to order my father's WW2 records. I have the form I need to fill out and I have a copy of his death certificate. I have his service dates as well as his DOB and SSN. I'm going to mail it tomorrow.

Has anyone ever ordered records before? What is usually in them? How long does it take the archives people to get the records to you?

Thanks!

It is very possible they won't have any of his records. The St Lois fire in the 1970's destroyed a lot of records, especially the US Army . But you should try anyway.

I've recently ordered replacement DD-214's (My originals were not available) and we got them in a short time (maybe two weeks). But mine were from the 60's and I only requested just those documents... But there are so many variables involved, it would be a guess...

Hopefully, they weren't destroyed. He was US Navy.

I'm really curious about his service, not to mention wanting to know exactly what he did in the military. My sister claims he told her he was a SEAL. He told me he worked in the military prisons. Who knows. I hope the info is in there. I would also love to know if he earned any medals or anything like that.

That's good to know. Thank you!

I mailed the request off yesterday. Hopefully I'll have the records soon and will share what they sent (in the event anyone else wants to request their relatives' records)
