My son has decided to join the ARMY. He met with a recruiter a month ago or so, and had taken his ASVAB test. Then he went to MEPS. My son has VERY poor vision, and he's only 18. Very poor. I don't know anyone with poor vision like this- he is nearsighted- his glasses are very thick, his prescription compared to mine is outrageous- he even needs his glasses to read because for him to read a book without glasses on, it needs to be about 5 inches from his face.
So at MEPS, the doctor was concerned with his vision because it's unusual for someone his age to have vision that poor. So he said that he can't enlist him, and that he needs to come back to MEPS for a more thorough eye check to make sure there's no underlying condition, and to get a waiver.
In my heart, I'm worried that his vision is so poor that even with no underlying condition, they won't approve him. I can't make sense out of a prescription and then compare it with what's acceptable for the ARMY, and I'm hoping people that post in this section might be able to. I don't know what his vision is corrected to; all I have is his prescription.

You should see about lasik. Don't go back to MEPS and have them say "no, never". Go back once his eyesight is corrected, if correction is possible. Vision
He may be able to join the state militia or possibly work as a National Guard Youth Challenge counselor, two very important gigs! (when God closes a door He usually opens a window)
If it makes you feel any better, I went to AIT in 2010 with someone who's vision was so poor he couldn't see his hand if he held it out at arm's length. We all took turns putting his glasses on and walking a lap around the barracks. No one was able to do it.

The only way to know for sure is for him to go to the MEPS scheduled optometry consult and submit a waiver. There are limits on how far they will waiver but I don't know what the Army's limits are.
I know there has been some issues in the past about military personnel and Lasik (or related) surgery. I would find out the current status of Lasik for entry into the military.
The response I received back was that he will have to go to MEPS. Often, MEPS doctors put the final determination back on the service. That said, assuming he is approved for a waiver, he will have some limitations on MOss he qualifies for.
LASIK surgery most likely results in a 6-12 month waiting period (estimation on my part--- Army Recruiter will know for sure).
Please me also went to mess today and they said that I have to see specialist first to decid if I can joining the army because of my vision my prescription is
