Any prior Air Force here stationed at Loring AFB in Maine? I know the base has been closed for some time, I was just wanting to hear stories from your days at Loring in Presque Isle. I am prior Air Force myself and was stationed with a MSgt that had been at Loring. He referred to it as "Boring AFB" because he said that unless you were an avid sportsman (hunt/fish/hike/camp) there was nothing in the area to do. He said that they do have some memorable winters there and that it was a SAC (B-52 and KC-135) base. Any prior Loring AFB Air Force members here?

I have never been in the Air Force, though after I retired we settled in Maine. One of our sons attended Job Corps that is located on the Loring Base. That area has very little going on. Pretty isolated.

One vet at my VFW post did his entire career at Loring. He tended bar at the enlisted club for like 25 years. He was able to qualify for the VFW, because his brother had served in the Korean War and was KIA. They flew him to Korea to escort his brother's body home for burial. He landed in Korea one day and left the next morning. But that was apparently enough to qualify for the VFW.

I was at Loring (in Limestone, ME) from Nov 69 to Aug 72. You make your own fun anywhere you go. I'm a sportsman, maybe not avid, and I had a memorable time there.
