The cons to each of those with the exception of QM is that they are going to be very hard to get into.

They are very heavily desired by female recruits and fill up quickly and are rarely offered when the applicant is at MEPS. The harder to fill jobs, with which females don't normally want, are what you're going to be offered generally.

QM is a job that is often available and would be easier to get than the others. Not saying it is impossible but most recruiters prepare their female applicants for the fact that the female friendly jobs are probably not going to be offered at MEPS.

Also, you can't be recruited into the Navy as a Legalman (LN). You must be serving in the Navy to apply for the LN program.

Source: I spent 15 years recruiting for the Navy in a senior leadership role.

My wife was an AZ and she had a great career. Highly recommend it if you can get it. QM would be good as well. I was an AX before they merged that into AT.

What about Culinary Specialist. How well do you have to know how to cook because I'm no whiz in the kitchen. I honestly don't particular like cooking, but i'll take it if offered since I just want to go. How's the math. Also is it a horrible job for an introvert? (INTJ). Pros? Cons?

Bowman's Mate? I know you don't have to do any schooling you just leave. Then you can change into the job you want in 2 years. Pros? Cons?

You don't have to know how to do anything when you join...your ASVAB score is going to indicate what you have an aptitude for and the Navy will offer you jobs they feel you can succeed at. They will train you in whatever job you pick.

Culinary Specialist are Boatswain's Mate are two of the harder jobs in the Navy. I would not recommend them as your first choice unless you have some particular draw to them. You'll work very hard in tough conditions in either of those jobs.

That being said, my philosophy was always that the worst job in the Navy was better than not being in the Navy at all. If you work hard and find the positive in every situation you can succeed and enjoy any job.

With most rates, it is preferred that you know little going in. They will train you. The more you already think you know, is more stuff that you will need to un-learn.

Technically you can change rates, but it is often insanely difficult to actually do.

Yeah, don't buy that change rate sales pitch. It is possible, however, it rarely works out in your favor. Get a job you can live with when you enlist, that is the best advice I can give you.

I hate to be a stickler but "RATE" refers to one's pay grade, E-5 for example.

"RATING" refers to one's job, QM (quartermaster) for example. So one would be exploring Navy ratings.

You would think even a NAVET off of that non-subsafe pigboat 633 would know that.

Sorry couldn't resist this fine morning.
