Is there some kind of an induction cut which is not just a straight all over buzz that leaves the head bald?
In other words, NOT like that.
I remember seeing a picture of a group of new recruits whose hair was all cut the same way: It looked like a high and tight but the top was only slightly longer, but still just like one length cut from a single clipper guard. There appeared to be no variation in any of the lengths. As if they all got the same exact haircut at the same time.
I checked You Tube for videos of current Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy recruit haircuts. Every male recruit still gets a buzz cut. I got mine in Navy Boot Camp in 1976. I think we got two more haircuts before we graduated. Trust me it grows back.
Maybe you were thinking of the haircut scene in "Stripes"?
I had just left the Navy when An Officer and a Gentleman was released. The haircut given to the AOCS candidates in that movie were not realistic either.
Do they do the same to the females?
If not, why not?
The guys in the reception center were skinned. I had waist length, thick hair (I am Hawaiian) and they cut my hair to my shoulder blades, so that I could put it all up per regulation.
They didn't know that it made it harder to keep neat at that length not easier. There were a couple of other girls that had their hair cut. There was some crying going on that night!
I ended up dating one of those guys during training. He always bemoaned the fact that his hair was already thinning at 18; I reminded him that I knew him when he was completely bald.
We've been together 35 years (married for 33) and he's been bald on top for most of those years.

It is only hair. It will grow back...or it won't!
I don't remember any of the females in my flight that had to get their hair cut.
I remember one had hair down to her waist. And yes it is easier to put long hair up.
I always had long hair during my time in service. Wore a French braid. Short hair takes a lot of work - believe it or not - lol

I think they need to do away with these boot camp/OCS cuts, especially if they don't have the same standard for men and women. I lived through my cut of course, but I think it's unnecessary.
