This sounds like a very bad idea. I've never been in the military but as a big guy I just couldn't see myself taking their yelling at me seriously.

Sounds to me like you really don't know what you're talking about.
We had female D's in Army Basic in 1988. None of my platoon's three D's were female, but another platoon in our company had one, as did those in adjacent battalions.

I think it depends on the female and also what courses she's teaching.
Not a lot of women can keep up with men physically (some can).
If they have to slow down the guys for her to keep up I'm totally against it.
Other than that - whatever.
I’m confused by “what course they are teaching.” Thought DI’s were with their platoon completely through training. I went through MCRD San Diego during Vietnam so my experiences are way out of date. We had DI’s obviously and instructors for classroom work, rifle range etc but they were never referred to as DI’s.

A lot of bigoted soldiers thought they would never take commands from a Black drill instructor, too. They got over it. I suspect the naysayers will fall in line over female drill instructors the same way.
You say that as a big guy, you couldn't take a woman seriously. What about a male drill seargeant who was physically small. Is it the height/weight, or is it the vagina?
What about any other commands? If you were issued a command to take a certain position or to fire on a certain location, but the command came from a female officer, would you just laugh it off and do what you want?
You say you have never been in the military. Probably best to keep it that way if you can't respect command authority.

There are DIs that teach hand- to- hand and those that teach history. Some teach close order drill, some teach marksmanship.
I don't think it's fair to have women doing personal hygiene inspections or yelling at them in the shower.
However the Israeli Defense Force does it.... that's fine. They all train together.
I went through Parris Island in the summer of 1986. They did a pretty good job separating the male recruits from the females, but we would see them occasionally like when lining up for shots, going to dental (which you'd often do solo after your initial screening if you needed work done), etc.
I remember being assigned to a working party during Mess and Maintenance Week. Due to where we were working, we ate at the closest chow hall, which happened to belong to the 4th Battalion (1st, 2nd and 3rd BNs are male, 4th female). The DIs had 6 of us eating at one table and cleared all the tables around us so we couldn't mix with the women. We were told not to look at them and I assume they were told the same. I did, however, manage to catch some interactions between the female DIs and their recruits. They seemed just as mean as my own male DIs - perhaps even worse, though maybe it was I wasn't used to seeing a woman get in another woman's face and scream at her
