My husband and I currently live in Yuma, AZ and he may have an opportunity to transfer to Havelock, NC. I despise Yuma so I'm wondering if North Carolina might be a better fit for me. I like the big city and I know Havelock is very small, but I read that the beach is closeby. Are there a lot of outdoor activities there? I love to bike, hike, rollerblade, and camp. What do you all think?
I take it you are referring to Cherry Point. You may want to do a search on Havelock on the internet. There is not much there. Yes the ocean is close, a little more than 30 minutes away, but the town of Havelock doesn't offer much at all. It is a nice town but there isn't much there by way of public recreation. However, there is great life the closer you get to the ocean. There are alot of small town that have affordable housing and are still not far from the beach. If it's recreation that you are looking for east is the way to go from Havelock.

Not far from Wilmington, NC. There is alot of history there and you will enjoy the community in Havelock. We used to go there alot to visit SIL, hubby was a Marine and stationed at Cherry Point. It's a pretty nice place to raise a family, grow a garden and all in all very nice area. It's about 3 1/2 hours from Virginia Beach, not far at all from Nags Head, so there is versatility on day trips.
If you are military, there will always be another transfer down the road until separation or retirement. You make the best of where you are, time in the places you like will go by too fast and time in the places you dislike will go by slowly. But there always a light at the end of the tunnel, because you know you don't have to stay there permanently. Good luck.
