Hi folks,

I am planning to stop in MKE in mid-June on my way from Chicago to MSP, since Amtrak allows a free stopover. My main questions are where to stay for one night (specific places or general areas) and suggestions for things to do. We arrive at MKE Amtrak Station ~5pm and depart ~3:30p the next day.

Will be me and my 6-month pregnant wife. I lived in Chicago for several years and did two day-trips up to MKE, but I don't think she's ever been.

Thanks!!

The Courtyard is just a couple blocks north of the train station, and there's also a Ramada Inn a couple blocks to the northwest. I've never stayed in either, though, and don't know anyone who has. If you don't mind spending some money, the Iron Horse Hotel is a nice boutique hotel south of the train station (but it lies just outside of downtown, whereas the other two mentioned are in downtown proper). There are other hotels downtown, such as the Pfister (classic grande-dame hotel) and the Hyatt Regency.

Thanks! So staying at those places near the train station are good places to stay for exploring the city a little?

Not sure what you're into, but I highly recommend Rays Growler Gallery:

Ray's Wine & Spirits | Milwaukee WI | Milwaukee's Wine Superstore

Yes, I would think so, though I don't have personal experience staying there. The Ramada is inexpensive and sort of on the edge of downtown (surrounded by parking lots and roads), but if you want something more centrally located and walkable to downtown attractions, the Courtyard would be better. The Iron Horse is a touch out of the way, but not too far out of the way.

I'd recommend the Pfister or Hotel Metro-being east of the river and north of Wisconsin ave is ideal for a short stay without a car. From there on foot or by bus you can explore downtown, north along the lake and south to the Third Ward.

Thanks for all the recs! I normally book with airbnb and just wanted to hear everyone's suggestions so I could analyze the map. Unfortunately the listing I wanted got booked so I may go the hotel route...we'll see. In any case, thanks to all!

This is good advice. The area around the train station is gross. Don't stay there.

I don't think there is all that much that's going to be appealing to a pregnant woman in downtown Milwaukee. Unless there is a specific activity or attraction you are looking for, make sure you stay in a nice hotel with one or more good restaurants. If nothing else, you'll have a nice place to spend the evening. The Pfister and Hotel Metro both fit the bill. The Intercontinental is also nice. If you want to go for a stroll, all three of these hotels are in a nice part of town.

If you want to score some crack at 3:00 AM, stay at the Ramada.
