I'm potentially moving from Ohio to MPLS, and looking for some advices on the places to live.

My situations: Potentially work at the University of Minnesota. I have a 6th grader. So my big concern are school and safe. Currently I live in a townhouse in a small suburban city of Columbus, and drive about 20-40 minutes to work (downtown area). I would like to rent a 2-bedroom with 1-2 bathroom for about $1,000 if possible.

I'm just wondering if I could getting some suggestions on places for me to start looking and the websites.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Please be careful on Craigslist, however. Do not give out any information until you feel sure the person is really renting.

You said you are going to work at the University of MN. Wonderful! Had family work there as professor. Do you know what location you will be working at? What campus location? That would be beneficial in helping you find the right neighborhood. You should be able to rent an apartment or condo for that budget. There are other options too, depending. Having a 6 year old is a big deal! I remember. : )

Not decided yet. It looks unlikely to drive to campus, so it may end up taking public transportation? Will it be an issue then regarding the schools for the kid?

Thank you.

Avoiding driving is a great idea when it comes to dealing with the University of Minnesota (especially with the current construction!). Parking is expensive and traffic can get quite congested around the morning and evening rush hours. Getting an unlimited ride bus/rail card would serve you well.

Public transportation shouldn't be a worry for schools. Since the U has traditionally had a lot of commuter students, there is a plethora of express bus (and regular bus) access. Park-and-rides in the suburbs will drop you off at campus...they're supposed to get there fairly quickly because they can drive on the shoulders of the backed-up freeways. There are also limited stop and regular buses in the city that would work just fine for you as well. There are a number of city neighborhoods that offer safe schools with good bus access. You could even live around the U for super-quick access. I live near an elementary school that seems to be well-regarded (not having children, I can't comment on specifics) and it's path leads to South High School, which is supposed to be good, diverse school.

It's really the lifestyle you want. From there, we can help offer some suggestions.
