Sharing on FB has consequences. A guy I work with thought it was a good idea to share a picture of him in his fishing boat on a day he called in sick. And was stupid enough to have management people as friends. Lucky he still has a job.

It's a slippery slope though firing people for that.
Where will it stop? Who will be fired next for what?
I don't agree with what these two did.

Pullmyfinger, way before internet when I was young I called in sick once, played hooky.
Someone I worked with saw me shopping and told my boss.
I got a good talking too. Not fired though.

Back in the day - the so-called 'good old days' - it was routine for public schools to fire teachers for cohabitation (now it's just religious schools in engage in such nonsense). As the husband of a elementary school teacher (public school) there are a whole host of things that my wife cannot do in her private life as terms of her contract. As a civil servant, I am limited in certain political activities.

This is not new.

When Henry Ford was CEO of The Ford Motor Company, he established a division that eventually numbered over 100 personnel. Their job? To investigate the lives of workers to make sure they were behaving 'properly'. Alcohol consumption. Sex lives. Gambling. Such were the details of lives that were investigated. One of the stipulations of married men was that their wives were not permitted to work outside the home.

Anyone recall the Red Scare? Those with the most tangential associations with socialism (far less direct that actually wearing communist uniforms) had their careers destroyed. The Civil Rights era? Those in the South who stood up for desegregation were risking career (not to mention life and limb).

Hell, even today just being gay is still cause for termination in many states (happily, Minnesota isn't one of them). But not long ago, it was the case in all states.

The idea that we're now heading down a 'slippery slope' is absurd. Unlike not so long ago, in many places the fact that you're a man with a boyfriend or husband is no longer a legal reason to terminate you. The auto manufacturer you work for can't fire you because your wife works. And as for political associations, if anyone thinks that 70 years ago (ie, 1947) that someone could parade around wearing the military attire of the Gestapo and not worry about their employment status is in serious need of a history lesson.

Replace the word 'Nazi' with 'NAMBLA' and I doubt such a story would cause the slightest ruckus, even though the principle is exactly the same.

I am going to sneak onto movie sets, and film anyone wearing Nazi uniforms, especially the SS! Then I will send it to the Media. Oh wait, they're already being filmed. Damn!

Anyone who would dishonor the sacrifice that our country made fighting the Nazis or the millions of European Jews that were slaughtered, by putting on a Nazi uniform or using their symbols, should be fired by any company that wants my business. Firing is about the most pleasant thing that comes to mind. I think I'm headed to the Uptown Diner for lunch this week.
