Hi all,
On a road trip cross-country and currently looking for a good route from Fargo, ND to Ironwood, MI (right on the WI border). I am looking at taking US-10 to MN-34E to MN-200 E and US-2 E into Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Anyone have a better route? Mapquest lists this as the fastest (6.5 hours, 350 miles) and I'm thinking it would be a lovely drive - have never been to northern Minnesota. Any suggestions are welcomed! Thanks!

I have traveled every inch of that route you just described and it is just about the fastest way if not the fastest. The only other route I can think of is to get onto highway 2 via 59 but that would add another 1/2 to an hour to the ride. I would take 34,200,2. The highlights of your trip are going to be Leech Lake by Walker, some pretty thick forests between there and Duluth, Lake Superior when entering Duluth and also when going through Ashland, WI. Once you get to Ironwood, the town of Bessemer just past it is beautiful with all of the bluffs surrounding the old mining towns. Have a great trip!

When are you going? We were just up in Northern MN this weekend and the leaves are getting close to peak-past peak in some areas.

I just traveled the 10 route and the 210 route.
Duluth to Fargo. Take 10-210.

The northern route is almost all 2 lane with a few passing lanes. 210 is mostly 4 lane.

Distance: 357.4mi Time: 7 hrs 8 mins
  • Starting in MOORHEAD, MN on CENTER AVE go toward S 6TH ST - go 1.11.8 mikm
  • Continue on HIGHWAY 10 E(US-75 N) - go < 0.10.1 mikm
  • Continue to follow US-75 N - go 0.10.2 mikm
  • Bear Right on US-10 E - go 113.7183.0 mikm
  • Turn Left on MN-210 - go 37.259.8 mikm
  • Turn Right on MN-210 - go 14.623.5 mikm
  • Continue on US-169 - go 7.912.8 mikm
  • Turn Right on MN-210 - go 55.789.6 mikm
  • Take ramp onto I-35 N - go 19.631.5 mikm
  • Take exit #255B/WISCONSIN onto I-535 S - go 2.84.5 mikm
  • Take the WI-35 S/US-53 S/US-2 exit onto US-53 S toward US-2 E - go 13.321.3 mikm
  • Bear Left on E US-2(US-2 E) - go 1.11.7 mikm
  • Continue to follow US-2 E - go 89.6144.3 mikm
  • Turn Right on N CURRY ST - go 0.50.9 mikm
  • Turn Right on E MCLEOD AVE - go 0.10.2 mikm
  • Arrive at the center of IRONWOOD, MI

Is the fastest and easiest route.

With all the rain and wind we received the past few days, peak will happen sometime this week.

I would travel up this way this coming weekend as it will all over by the weekend after.

The leave are changing and falling off of the trees kind of fast this year.

I know this post was made almost three years ago, but my recommendation for the latter part would be to take Wisconsin State Highway 13 from near Superior, WI to Ashland, WI, and then US 2 from Ashland, WI to Ironwood, MI. Much more scenic.

I made this post for future reference. WI 13 is so much more scenic than US 2, which for the most part (in Wisconsin) is just a more typical forested expressway.

What makes it more scenic? Looking at several random Google Street views they both look the same, any view could have been on either road just two lane through forest land, maybe a few more slight curves on 13/77 but neither looked more scenic than the other.
