Do you speak with a Minnesotan accent? Select the features of speech that apply to you in the poll above.

Also, what has been your experience with the accent towards those who might not hear it all the time?

I've had strangers ask me where I'm from in New York City. In Florida, I was doing random interviews for a research project when an interviewee happened to say "you're either from Minnesota or Wisconsin". I've been told that I also speak Spanish with a Minnesotan accent, which I'm not sure what to make of.

Undoubtedly, I do.

Not much, as far as I can remember.

I'm guessing that's because, as someone from southern Minnesota, my speech is generally unremarkable to most Americans because it is fairly proximate (stress: fairly proximate, not identical), both spatially and linguistically, to Standard American English - akin to a Brit with an accent close to that of Received Pronunciation.

There's a difference, surely, but a less remarkable one than, for example Northeastern or Southern accents.

This is always fun:

I've lived in AZ for the past 6 years and when I'm here every now and again that accent will come out on a random word. My hubby is from seattle and he has never heard many phrases I use. BUT when I go back for a bit to mn and return I'm right back to minnesota accent, or when I'm drinking... It's like I never moved away.
