My budget for purchasing a house puts me in St Peter or Faribault.

If you had to live there, and work in the cities which would you pick?

The commute to Faribault from Mpls is 50 minutes.
The commute to St Peter from Mpls is 1hr 10 mins.

The commute from the western suburbs (where i work now, but no job is for ever) is the opposite.. St Peter is 50 mins from the western burbs while Faribault is an hour or more.

This is not science, this is a poll, if you had to chose between Fairbault and St Peter which would you pick?

Neither if you're commuting to the Twin Cities. How are Faribault and St. Peter the only choices? There are dozens of other towns that are closer to the Twin Cities and should not be any more expensive. Faribault seems rather plain to me in a good way. Commuting to the southwest suburbs would be miserable as there really isn't a good way to travel to the northwest from Faribault. St. Peter is a college town. It's not that much different than other towns of similar sizes. There's a bit more entertainment and culture. There are also more college students. If you're dead-set on one of those two, I'd suggest looking for work in either of them, Mankato, Northfield, Owatonna, and other surrounding towns. Between the two, I'd pick St. Peter. The sports and music events at the college far outweigh having a few drunken college students in town.

If you'll be commuting to the western suburbs but would still like to live in a small town, I'd recommend a town like Belle Plaine or Jordan because St. Peter and Faribault seem unnecessarily far away. If you absolutely have to choose between St. Peter and Faribault, I'd choose St. Peter because it is a very scenic town.
