We want to do a family vacation this summer with in driving distance (5-6 hours TOPS) from the cities. New to the state, so all ideas are very welcome!

That all depends on what you like to do on vacation. Too general of a question.

The North Shore
This is the section of Lake Superior shoreline that stretches from Duluth (less than 3 hours from all parts of the Twin Cities) to the Canadian border (less than 3 hours from Duluth).

In Duluth, don't miss Canal Park, including the small but terrific (and free!) maritime museum there.

Up the shore itself, there are 8 state parks and 1 national monument. All have excellent hiking trails that explore the wild rivers and waterfalls the rocky bluffs along the lake. This is Minnesota at its most scenic. And about two hours from Duluth is Grand Marais, a funky little town with eating and arts (do not miss the Dockside Fish Market!).

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
This is in Michigan, but it's only about five hours from the Cities. It is a wilderness park, with long backcountry trails along the shore of Lake Superior and along inland ridges. It is arguably the finest hiking state park in the Midwest.

Wabasha, Lake Pepin, Mackinac Island, Door County, Grand Marais/ Two Harbors, Brainerd, Upper Peninsula of Michigan are my ideas. These are all good summer getaways, some would be good in winter, but Summer would be more enjoyable.
