So, Dayton has appointed Lt. Gov Tina Smith to Franken's seat, and MPR is reporting that she also intends to run for the seat in the 2018 special election.

I expected that she would probably be the one appointed, and from what I've read she seems to be a very good choice.

Dayton said that she has been the "best Lt. Governor" in MN history (or something along those lines.) Woo Hoo!

Anyone have any opinions about or experiences with Tina Smith?

If you want to get an idea of her accomplishments in office, google “tina smith -franken”. She seems most famous for not running for governor in 2018.

Here is an interesting article on the topic from MinnPost. The takeaway is that Tina Smith was appointed in an effort to unseat Michelle Fischbach, the Republican President of the State Senate who is to succeed Smith as Lt. Governor. Republicans currently have a one seat majority in the Senate and if the Democrats can get her to step down they have a chance, albeit slim, to win her district and take the majority. Fischbach is not going for it, citing precedent that would allow her to hold both positions.

The upshot is that Tina Smith is just a political tool and we really shouldn’t expect anything more than a reliable Democratic vote from her.
