I have been thinking for sometime now about having a Lasik eye surgery instead of wearing glasses. I do not know a lot about this procedure but want to know from people who did this. I am scared that It will have lot of side effects atleast not now may be after few years and I am thinking I have to take medicines. Also please tell me what could be the price ranges to have this procedure. My insurance wont cover this anyway and I am ready to pay it from my pocket.

I wore glasses from 6th grade until I had Lasik at the age of 19. Some might think that's early since my eyes are still adjusting at that age, they're probably right but my vision was so bad I needed to turn back the clock, so to speak. My left eye has always been my best eye- my right eye, well I could only read the big "E" before the surgery. I wanted the freedom of not having to deal with glasses-hated the way they looked on me, etc.

Post surgery my vision was sharp. My right eye could never be perfect; we knew that going in and after surgery it wasn't perfect. But it was incredibly better!

5 years later, I feel like my vision's regressed a little. I still don't need glasses but my distance vision is not as sharp as it was just after surgery. I knew this was a possibility when I was deciding to continue with surgery and I'd still do it all over again. We'll have to see where my vision goes. I may choose to touch-up the surgery down the road. I have no real side-effects I guess though. Results vary though...it's important to find a place that will walk you through the process and be open about what's ahead.

To give you a general gist of what to expect based on my experiences:
You'll go through a ton of different tests that check every aspect of your eyes. They will assess the results and determine if indeed you're a candidate. Not everyone is. If you are, then your cost for the surgery will be based off of your vision and the amount of correction that is necessary. My mom paid for my surgery so I can't tell you exactly what my surgery cost but it was over a thousand dollars, I'm sure of that. Anyhow, after the surgery I spent a week in bed, sleeping. I know people who have had Lasik and then were out a day later with sunglasses on but otherwise completely back to normal. I had a handful of drops and medication to take to prevent infection, keep my eyes lubricated and kill the pain. The only things I had to take for a long period of time were the lubricating drops so that I wouldn't get dry-eyes. I can't remember how long that was for though. The follow up process is long, I want to say it was 6 months of checking in with the drs office routinely. But after that life is as it was, just without 4-eyes!

P.S. I went to Four Seasons Eye Care off 169 in Plymouth for my entire experience.

Default Thanks

Thanks MNNative. That was enough elaborate. I think I have to do a lot of homework from my side before I conclude anything. Until I get enough confidence on this method I will have glasses

Default Lasik eye surgery

Hi,
My husband had lasik eye surgery done, on both eyes, 11 years ago. His vision was very poor (wore glasses from a young age) and he either wore hard contact lenses or coke-bottle glasses. He had one eye done on a Friday and, one week later, the other eye done. I drove him to and from the appointment, ensured that he stayed in a dark room for 24-hours with eye drops when his eyes were open (every few hours, I think). His eyes healed quickly and he had no problems.

Today, 11 years later, his eyes have dimmed a tiny bit. He now wears glasses for long vision, when he is driving (or watching a movie at a theatre). To have lasik eye surgery was the best decision that he ever made (besides marrying me, of course

Of course, now that we're in our 50's, and he can see as soon as he wakes up and opens his eyes, he can see me in the morning. Not always a pretty sight.

But, again, best decision that he ever made.

Mari
