I lived there from 1978-93. We left the Biloxi area because of all of the casinos moving in. When we left there were 3. When Katrina hit, there were 15. I had 3 kids under 12 at that point, and didn't want to raise them in a Las Vegas type atmosphere.
On that note, the other coastal towns are great. Cost of living should be do-able.
The weather is acceptable...the ocean breezes keep the coast cooler from March to December, blowing from south to the north. Then it switches and blows from the north for the 3 months of "winter".
Of course you need to consider hurricane season. Every year. And prepare accordingly. That part of the Gulf Coast gets hurricanes pretty regularly. We went through several while we lived there.
Yes, it gets hot in the summer. But if you find a house that faces south to north, you have a better chance of catching those cooling breezes.
The culture is wonderful, and being 90 miles from New Orleans...great for day trips. Good drive on I-10 or Hiway 90 for a more leisurely trip.
I was going to move back there in 2008, but that was too soon after Katrina. It may be more recovered by now.
Good luck with your move!

One of my aunts and her husband moved to Summit, MS from Champange, IL they are retires now being the reason they left was because of family in the area and they wanted to get away from the vicious Illinois winters. The area of South MS they are in seems okay. I imagine the coast is nice escpecially near the actual beach. Biloxi though I have heard is not a nice place as a town. Where are you in Omaha? As long as you arent on the North end of town why would you want to move?

Grew up on the Alabama gulf coast so am very familiar with this part of south MS. Would never consider moving here. Today, the casinos are very predominant in this area, which has brought in traffic, crime, etc.. There's always the threat of hurricanes in the summer, and this part of the coast seems to get a lot of them or threats of potential strikes. Sad to say, I see no reason a person would move to this area when there are many other good options in the South.
