Grits with Cheese.. Is a very popular food in Mississippi. Crayfish and Flounder, and chicken strips seem to be popular as well, because there are all sorts of fast food joints that serve just that. ZAXBYS was my favorite.
Pizza with French Dressing dip is also common.
But really the people in Mississippi love their food, and just about anything you can get where you are, you can get in Mississippi as well.
Cajun is also a staple. Hope you like it hot and spicey.

I really like all of these foods. I have never tried grits, though. I eat a lot of spicy food, so that won't be a problem.

Lived on the MS Gulf Coast for the first 45 years, am a TN transplant for the last three.
Breakfast: southern style biscuits, grits are the first regional things that come to mind. That and all the typical breakfast items you will find anywhere.
Lunch/dinner: seafood, cooked a variety of ways (all of it available fried), everything from shrimp to crabs to fish to oysters to crawfish. Poboys, fried shrimp or roast beef & gravy are my favorites. (Think New Orleans style foods, you will find all of them here.) Barq's Root Beer is a staple on the coast, along with iced tea. And wonderful boiled shrimp or crabs or crawfish, seasoned with a wonderful spice to them. None of that bland steamed seafood there!
Dessert: MS Mud Cake or Pie (very rich and chocolaty), bread pudding, Red Velvet Cake, cobblers, and all the regular staples
The food is wonderful on the MS Gulf Coast. New Orleans cuisine spills over there because of the large population of Cajuns who live on the coast. I still miss the convenient access to great food.
But not enough to leave these Smoky Mtns.
And as mentioned earlier, I still enjoy pizza with french dressing!!

I have never had cheese on my grits....that is a new one! I do love grits, though. My dad mixes his fried eggs in with them. Waffle House is big down South, and they are all over the place in Mississippi. There is a section of highway in Gulfport where there are 3 within a couple of miles of each other. Waffle House was the first thing to build back on the beach after Katrina.

Let me preface this by saying 1/2 my family is from MS and I've lived there many years, etc. So the food that I'm know from MS is mostly fried, fried, fried, heavy & fried. I haven't been back to Gulfport since right before Katrina and maybe things have changed but my experience is that one of the only places to get something thats not fried is to go to the casinos. Even the lightest thing is made rich and heavy (like grits!). But not to say I don't enjoy the food, tho...

No, things haven't changed. And if it isn't fried, it is covered in butter or gravy!
