I will be in Columbia next week to surprise my Mother for her birthday. I would like to take her out for a good dinner. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like something nice, but casual, and hope to find a "local" place instead of a chain. Thanks!

Why not take her to Abigail's in Rocheport? It is a quick drive from Columbia. You'll need a reservation.

CC's City Broiler. The winner and still champeen here, even if the website is way too flash-y. Doesn't matter. Not cheap (probably $50/person including wine), and while there's no dress code, I wouldn't go in jorts and a wife-beater or anything like that. The bread is awesome, the steaks are wonderful (I ordered a small filet animal-style, which is like a marchand de vin sauce). Superb seafood they fly in FRESH daily. Best service in town by far, knowledgeable and helpful but never stuffy. They don't take reservations. Either go early (dinner only, 7 days, usually open at 5) or be prepared to wait.

Nothing else in the area comes close for top-flight dining. It's gradually, and in some cases not so gradually, running the competition out of business. We don't go anywhere else for an event (anniversary, etc.) dinner.

There are a number of great non-chain alternatives. Sycamore is probably the best rival to CC's, more gourmet-ish, nice location downtown (CC's is southwest of downtown). I like Sophia's, best for their tapas menu. The two long-time restaurant blogs for Columbia are comowhineanddine (more down to earth) and showmeeats, although you may have to go back a bit in time to get more restaurant reviews. We still don't have THAT many restaurants for them to review.

Addison's is downtown, has loads of sophisticated charm, and the new American food is always good.

And here I thought y'all were coming for the Karl Marx Memorial California Vegan Organic Vegetable Medley.

Srsly, you'll love it. Just don't eat a heavy lunch beforehand, or come on something like Mother's Day or MU's Commencement weekend. Whenever that is.

Only if we can combine it with a trip to Rolla to observe the 1st Annual Ozarks Gay Pride Parade and Love Fest!
