I recently responded to a home owner who had a receptacle in her home melt, and it was so badly melted I'm surprised the house didn't catch fire. The circut is on a 15 amp breaker. Only a washing machine and space heater are routinely routinely used on this circuit. The melted receptacle was on an opposing wall with nothing plugged in. She recently changed the receptacle out and in less than a week the neutral wire sheathing was melted back. What's the cause of this? Bad breaker? Bad wiring when home was built? Space heater and waahing machine overloading the circuit? I checked her connections and she stripped just enough back so there wasnt any exposed to arch. And why only the neutral wires melting and not the hot side? Any help will be great so I can inform the home owner.

If it was a lightning strike youd think the whole house breaker would have tripped or other issues around the home. This is a house where an electrician put two baseboard heaters an inch below two receptacles. I wasn't there for that so I didn't check the brand of baseboard heater to see if its allowed. But I told them to turn those heaters off....forever....I'm going back as a courtesy this week for that melted receptacle issue anyways and want them to feel safe to use those plugs

Its ok. After sleeping on it. I called the home owner and gave them two numbers to licensed electricians who can dive into the issue and handle the situation better than I could. Thanks for the help.
