Jubilee! Crabs, flounder, shrimp come ashore near Fly Creek in Fairhope (photo gallery) | al.com

A jubilee is a naturally occurring event on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay in which bottom-dwelling sea life such as flounder, crabs, eels and shrimp get caught in low-oxygenated water and swim toward the shoreline.

Mobile Bay Jubliee

Interesting that I never remember hearing about this back in the day. And, this would certainly be an easier way to catch flounder than my dad's way... which was to "go floundering", i.e., gigging for flounders at night... we kids hated that, especially when we'd see an eel. Ugh!!!

But we loved those fried flounders he'd cook up in his outside fish fryer (no frying fish in the house rule)... always seasoned just right!

I don't either but my grandmother moved to Fairhope and in the 60s my DS was spending the night with her and my DS said she thought there might be one that night.. and she was right they found a small one.

My LH use to go gigging for flounders. One time he brought my mother a couple. She fried them up only to realize he hadn't scaled them.. LOL

Now I am going to have to go to Wentzels to get a seafood fix. One of the things I don't like about living in NA.. is they think seafood is fried catfish. Now that Wentzel's is up here I can at least get some real seafood

Hmmm, I think we just need to go visit humacaena... let's see, ten flounders... mmm... I'm betting she's a really good cook and that may be just enough for all of us to have for dinner!

Oh my goodness, crab cakes are my very favorite and those with that wonderful sauce sound awesome!

So, forget about frying those old flounders, ha, ha!

When's dinner?

I love crab cakes too. Flounders are a bit tricky to cook. I will be happy to show you how when we come over for dinner.
