My wife and I own a home in the Ft. Morgan area which we rent out a good part of the year. There have been rigs in the gulf and the bay ever since we've had the house but it seems like there are more every time we make a trip down. If many more pop up I'm afraid it's going to seriously impact our ability to rent the house to vacationers. Does anyone know if there's a stopping point? Will they continue to pop up until the aesthetic beauty of the place is completely ruined? We made a trip over the ferry to Dauphin Island and I noticed it's even worse over there. Why is the revenue generated by these things more important than revenue generated by tourism?

Many State Govt administrative functions are directly funded by oil / gas royalties. The royalties also fund the Forever Wild program, which somewhat balances the aesthetic / environmental impact.

I agree that the oil rigs disturb the natural beauty of the area - I love Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island in part because they are relatively underdeveloped. However, while I might prefer the rigs being located farther out into the Gulf, rigs are safer when located in shallower water.

IMO people get used to the rigs - people go for the beach. Mar, Arena, Sol. Que MAS quieres.

From what I understand, all the rigs off the Alabama coast are gas rigs not oil. When vacationers ask about them we try to stress this fact. Even though gas rigs are just as ugly, most people don't think of them as being as nasty or polluting as oil rigs.

It's not like Alabama has much coastline to be messing up. With only about 60 miles of Gulf front it really bugs me that the state has allowed big oil and gas to screw up half of it. But then again, that's Alabama for you.
