Define what you mean by off the grid. It really has different meaning to different people.

Is it still possible to get a job on a ranch as a ranch hand?it would be great to have a job with room and board so I could save money to get a place of my own.

By off the grid I mean I don't want electricity, except for possibly a very small amount that I make myself.

There are usually ranch hand jobs coming available now through April.

What do you plan to use for food, and for making the electricity and home heat?

I honestly don't think this will be easy. Possible but not easy. Are you currently doing any of these self sufficiency things?

Do you mind me asking what is motivating this desire of yours?

Maxwellhouse, My wife and I are really thinking of retiring in Montana. My wife grew up in Amsterdam, NY and moved to Houston in 1983 or 84'.We met and got married in 86'. From all my research, Montana weather is not as bad as upstate NY. Montana is not as crowded as Houston. The whole population of Montana is 1/4 the population of Houston. Something I'm looking forward to. I'm tired of lots of people. I looking forward to being around real people and not the animals that are here. Good luck on you move............Steve.

I live in a remote area in Colorado where winters are a bit shorter and a good bit sunnier than Montana. Some of my neighbors are off the grid, but we have enough sunshine for solar panels. As the writer above mentioned it is pretty much impossible to grow enough food to be self-sufficient in many places up in the mountains. The growing season is too short if you don't have pretty substantial greenhouse. I would suggest you look for a climate and water availability that suits your goal. I am originally from the south. You can get way back in the country in any of the deep south states and have a good climate for growing about any fruit or vegetable. Also the bears and mountain lions won't eat your livestock.
