Nothing wrong with 50 people on deck if it was built for that, thats really not outrageous considering people have hot tubs and all sorts of weight on their decks.

People just assume decks are built right.....when i bought my Montana ranch the deck (huge deck) was supported by a ledger board with 5 dry wall screws in it...couldnt believe it

I have built a LOT of decks, in places where the codes are as strict as they get. Even there, I have seen more decks done poorly than done well. The simple structural rule that support must be continuous to the foundation seems to be among the great mysteries of life for most deck builders. You could always tell my decks from others in the neighborhood at a glance, the lumber was bigger. Never got a call that one of mine fell down, and did not want to. I am continually amazed at the crappy construction that decks consist of, even on high dollar homes. Maybe one in twenty is done even close to right. Seriously.

Codes are a minimum acceptable level, a starting point. A good deck is built beyond what codes require.

Had to know from the picture, but it looks like one of the big vertical support posts wasn't anchored (at either end), went over sideways, and took that section of deck with it. There's no way that mass of timber shouldn't have held 50 people, or even 500 people, if it was done right. I'd guess there's no footing under the big vertical posts.
